See the Red Light CapRed light therapy for hair uses red (650–660 nm) and near-infrared (850 nm) light on the scalp, the wavelengths used in published studies of red-light devices. At home that means 10 or 20 minutes, 3–4 times a week, with a cordless red light cap or a handheld scalp device, plus scalp care for the days in between.

Red and near-infrared light pass through the skin of the scalp and are absorbed by the cells around the hair follicles. Research on photobiomodulation suggests this light helps those cells produce more energy (ATP), which may support the growth phase of the hair cycle.
Two things follow. The light has to reach the scalp, so you use it on clean, dry hair. And the effect builds slowly: studies measured changes after 16 weeks or more of regular sessions, not after a few uses. Consistency matters more than session length. Wavelength and dose, explained.
These are randomized trials of other red-light devices, each compared with an identical-looking sham device. They describe the category, not the Folliq cap.

Randomized trials of red-light devices found more hairs per cm² than identical-looking sham devices after about 16 weeks, in both men and women. Results vary from person to person and depend on regular use. Read the full evidence review.
Most studies used sessions three times a week or every other day. With the Folliq cap that means 10 or 20 minutes, 3–4 times a week. More often is not better; regular is.
Hair grows slowly, so plan on at least 16 weeks of regular use before you judge; the studies measured at 16 to 26 weeks. Take a photo in the same light every four weeks to compare.
Studies reported few side effects, and the ones mentioned were mild and temporary, such as scalp itching or a short phase of extra shedding. The cap gives off no noticeable heat. Read our safety page if you have a light-sensitive condition or take photosensitising medication.
Both deliver red light in the same range, and studies have used lasers, LEDs and mixes of both. Lasers cost more to make; what matters most in the studies is wavelength, dose and regular use. LED vs laser, compared.
Red light is often used alongside other routines. Keep the derma roller on separate days from red light, and ask your doctor before combining it with prescription treatments. Red light vs minoxidil.
